types of service providers

Types of service providers

ITIL distinguishes several types of service providers. Although most aspects of Service Management are valid for all types, there are also some that are different for each type, such as clients, contracts, competition, markets and income.

ITIL defines the following three archetypes:

     Type 1.- Internal service provider

They are those who present their services within their own business units.

Type 1 vendors are present in organizations where the IT,  marketing or production departments determine the competitive position of the organization, for which  a high degree of control is required.

         Type 2.- Shared services unit.

They present services to business units that operate following the same collective strategy.

Functions such as finance, IT, human resources, and logistics are not always primarily responsible for an organization's competitive advantage, so it is not necessary to maintain them at the corporate level. The services for these shared functions are often grouped together in a self-contained unit called a shared services unit types of service providers.

· Type 3.- External service provider.

They present services in competitive environments that need flexible structures.

Customers compete with each other and all have access to the same assets of the service provider.
